Stage Director

Dean Anthony is embarking on a new career as a stage director, for which he has received great critical acclaim. As a former spieltenor, Dean essayed over 80 roles. In particular demand for his portrayals of the roles, Puck in A Midsummer Nights Dream, Little Bat in Susanna, Curley in Of Mice And Men, the Witch in Hansel And Gretel, Pong in Turandot, Bardolfo in Falstaff, Beppe in I Pagliacci, Pedrillo in Die Entfuhrung Aus Dem Serail, Sancho in Man Of La Mancha, Monostatos in Die Zauberflote, Alfred in Die Fledermaus , Brigella and Tanzmeister in Ariadne Auf Naxos, Njegus in The Merry Widow, The four Servants in Les Contes D’Hoffmann, and Goro in Madama Butterfly. He is a frequent guest with companies across North America including L’Opera de Montreal, San Francisco Opera, New York City Opera, Baltimore Opera, Florida Grand Opera, Vancouver Opera, Florentine Opera, Michigan Opera Theater, Arizona Opera, Palm Beach Opera, Nashville Opera and Opera Carolina.

As Sam Kaplin and Daniel Buchanan in the acclaimed production of Street Scene, which was televised worldwide, Mr. Anthony made his European debut with Theater im Pfalzbau in Ludwigshafen, Germany, with subsequent performances in Berlin at Theater des Westens. Other television appearances include broadcasts of An Evening Of Gilbert And Sullivan with the Boston Pops, and the world premiere of Robert Greenleaf’s Under The Arbor, both on PBS. With the St. Louis Symphony he appeared as Remendado in Carmen, and in a unique staged double bill of Carmina Burana and Pagliacci, Mr. Anthony received great critical acclaim for his portrayal of the Swan and Beppe with Opera Omaha.

Mr. Anthony was Artistic Director of the newly formed Diamond Opera Theater in upstate New York for two seasons. Also as the resident stage director, he produced and directed The Medium and The Face On The Barroom Floor. His devoloping directing career has lead him to Opera Tampa for Anton Coppola’s Sacco And Vanzetti and co-director of their La Fanciulla Del West as well as Hansel And Gretel and Man Of La Mancha with Augusta Opera, The Merry Widow with the University of Minnesota at Duluth, Sweeney Todd and Le Tragedie De Carmen with Augusta Opera. His upcoming directing credits include Manon Lescaut and Man Of La Mancha at Shreveport Opera, and has joined David Gatley as Assistant Director to the Brevard Music Center Opera Program and will direct Suor Angelica for the Janiec Opera Company.

Mr. Anthony will apprear and has recently appeared as Mime in Das Rheingold with the Indianapolis Opera and Symphoy, Spoletta in Tosca with Baltimore Opera, Goro in Madama Butterfly, Lutz in Student Prince, and a production of L’Enfant Et Les Sortilege as Teapot, Tree Frog, and the Old Man with The Nashville Opera, Monostatos in Die Zauberflote with New York City Opera, Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream with the Princeton Festival and Florentine Opera, Curley in Of Mice And Men with Vancouver Opera, the servants in Les Conte Di Hoffmann and Edmundo, Dance Master, and the Lamplighter in Manon Lescaut with Palm Beach Opera, Howard Boucher in Dean Man Walking with Michigan Opera Theater, Valzacchi in Der Rosenkavalier with Opera Carolina, and Voltaire, Pangloss, and the Governer in Candide with Lake George Opera, Puck in A Midsummer Nights Dream with Utah Opera, 1st Officer/Sandy in Peter Maxwell Davies' The Lighthouse in Nashville, Nick in Fanciulla Del West with Florida Grand Opera, Mungo in Charles Dibdin’s The Paddlock with Chicago Opera Theater, Monstatos in Die Zauberflote with Opera Carolina and Michigan Opera Theater, Pong in Turandot with Nashville and Indianapolis Opera. Mr. Anthony can be heard on Naxos* as Kaspar in Amahl And The Night Visitors, he received his Masters of Music from The New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. He was a winner in the New England region of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, and is a recipient of the Shoshana Foundation Award from Central City Opera.
