Deja Vu

by Florentine Opera

This Saturday, audiences at our 75th Anniversary Concert & Celebration will enjoy performances by Cynthia Lawrence, Robynne Redmon, Jonathan Boyd and Mark S. Doss. (Still need your tickets? Click here or call 414-291-5700 ext 224).

While watching them onstage this weekend, you may have a feeling you’ve seen them all before – and you’d be right. In fact, all four have performed for Florentine Opera audiences.

You may remember Cynthia Lawrence, soprano, for her portrayal of the ambitious but spot treating-challenged Lady Macbeth in the Florentine’s 2007′s production of Verdi’s Macbeth.
(Pssst: She’ll also return next season to star in the title role of Puccini’s Tosca!):

Or how about acclaimed mezzo soprano Robynne Redmon? She sang the role of Mercedes in our 1988 production of Bizet’s Carmen.  Since we don’t have digital photographic evidence of her 1988 visit to the Florentine, you’ll have to click here to watch her in concert as Carmen herself at Opera de Montreal’s gala in 2007.

Tenor Jonathan Boyd spent the 1993-94 season with the Florentine as part of the Apprentice Artist program. Most recently, he has returned in featured roles such as
Don Ottavio in Mozart’s Don Giovanni (2006), and he charmed us all as Camille de Rossillon in Lehar’s The Merry Widow (2007). (He’s pictured below with soprano Heather Buck as Valencienne and, of course, the iconic, trouble-making fan):

Mark S. Doss
, who happens to be a Grammy Award-winning bass-baritone, recently sang the role of Jochanaan in the Florentine’s 2008 production of Salome.
Here he is, pictured with Erika Sunnegardh in the title role (still with a good head on his shoulders, to boot):

A night of opera favorites, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, anniversary festivities and 75 years of Milwaukee’s cultural  history awaits. We’d love to see you there!

Remember the Ladies

by Florentine Opera

Last week, we shared some pictures of the Florentine Opera’s encounters will all three of the famed Tenors. We would never want to be seen as neglectful, so here is a look back at just some of the lovely – and internationally renowned -  ladies who have graced our stage over the years:

In 2008, Swedish soprano Erika Sunnegårdh made her role debut with the Florentine in the title role of Salome, although she first appeared in Milwaukee with the Florentine Opera as Leonore in our 2005 production of Fidelio.

In 2005, soprano Angela Brown delighted Milwaukee audiences in the title role of Aida. The New York Times agreed, writing of her: “At last – An Aida!”

And many of our patrons fondly remember our 1978 production of Donizetti’s The Daughter of the Regiment, starring none other than Beverly Sills as Marie. (Ms. Sills also starred in Lucia di Lammermoor in 1974).
