Opera on the Go! 'Pinocchio'

An operatic version of the children’s literary classic, Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, based on scenes from operas by W.A. Mozart, G. Donizetti, J. Offenbach, and G.B. Pergolesi.

Synopsis of the 2014 Tour of Pinocchio.

Stepping into a new and unknown world, Pinocchio is hoodwinked by Wolf and Cat and persuaded to disobey his father by skipping school in order to meet Dr. Dulcamara, a loathsome puppeteer. Dulcamara detains Pinocchio with the intention of having him perform with his miraculous mechanical doll, Olympia. The puppet and doll become friends, and when Dulcamara breaks Olympia in a fit of rage, Pinocchio runs home to admit his disobedient behavior and ask his father's forgiveness. Accompanied by a policeman, Pinocchio and his dad lead the authorities to Wolf, Cat and Dulcamara, and the bad guys are run out of town. As Pinocchio resolves to always tell the truth and share his problems with trusted grownups, he and his father head home to repair Olympia and begin life anew as a family of three.

Pinocchio - Overview: January-April, 2014.

From the composer who brought us The Billy Goats Gruff, The Three Little Pigs, Little Red's Most Unusual Day, and Jack and the Beanstalk comes another clever tale created to introduce children to opera. Due to popular demand, Pinocchio returns to entertain students in schools, libraries, and various community venues for ten weeks beginning in January, 2014.

Pinocchio features the 2013-2014 Florentine Opera Studio Artists. These artists-in-residence portray the beloved characters and facilitated an educational, post-performance question and answer session with audiences.

The Florentine Opera Company provides teachers with a Teacher Resource Guide* designed to enhance student's learning experience. The resource guide provides supplemental opera and music education materials, and connects the program to Wisconsin Academic Standards. Using visual, aural and action methods, Pinocchio exposes students to opera in a multi-disciplinary format. Additionally, students receive the developmental benefits of arts education, such as expanded abstract thinking and problem solving abilities, increased interest in self-expression, and a venue to enhance self-discipline, communication skills, perseverance and leadership.
