Joel Sorensen

Joel Sorensen appeared with his first major opera house in his 1994 New York City Opera debut as Monostatos in The Magic Flute. He has since given more than 200 performances in over two dozen productions including Madama Butterfly, Falstaff, Turandot, Salome, Prince Igor, Of Mice and Men, La rondine, Les contes d’Hoffmann, Il trittico, Mefistofele, Haroun and the Sea of Stories, and Mathis der Maler.

Mr. Sorensen made his Metropolitan Opera debut in 2000 in Samson et Dalila and was heard subsequently in Sly, Madama Butterfly, Salome, and Der Rosenkavalier. He recently ventured into Wagner with Opera Theater of Pittsburgh in performances of Jonathan Dove’s English-language Ring Cycle as Loge in The Rhinegold and Mime in Siegfried.

Mr. Sorensen has sung for the opera companies of San Francisco, San Diego, Seattle, Baltimore, Portland, Philadelphia, and Atlanta. He has also distinguished himself with the Florentine Opera, Utah Opera, Kentucky Opera, Tulsa Opera, Palm Beach Opera, Opera Orchestra of New York, Lake George Opera Festival, Wolf Trap Opera, and the Spoleto Festival U.S.A. Last season saw him in San Diego as Andres in Wozzeck and with England’s Longborough Festival as Mime and Loge in The Ring Cycle.

In 2007-08 Mr Sorensen made his Los Angeles Opera debut in Tosca, returned to the Florentine Opera for his first King Herod in Salome, to NYCO for Margaret Garner and Falstaff, to the Met for War and Peace and to Longborough in July 2008 to sing Rheingold.

Future performances see Mr. Sorensen returning to Atlanta Opera and Florentine Opera for Madama Butterfly, San Diego Opera for Don Quichotte, Romeo et Juliette and Der Rosenkavalier, and Los Angeles Opera for Turandot.
