Florentine Opera Company Continues Tradition of Creativity and Fiscal Responsibility; Announces Balanced Budget for the 2006-2007 Fiscal Year
September 19, 2007—Florentine Opera Company Board President Wayne Lueders announced that once again, Milwaukee’s Florentine Opera Company ended its fiscal year with a balanced budget and summed up the organization’s impressive achievements over the past season at the Annual Meeting today. The Florentine Opera Company’s 2006-2007 season was a year filled with opera at its grandest, running the full gamut of emotions from light-hearted comedy to searing tragedy. Lueders noted, “Once again, the Florentine had an exemplary year of artistic creativity paired with fiscal responsibility, showcasing the organization’s dedication to presenting classic opera with a contemporary viewpoint.”
Lueders mentioned highlights of the season, such as the well-received, all-new production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni and the innovative new production of Verdi’s Macbeth, directed by Milwaukee Shakespeare’s Paula Suozzi and designed and built in-house by the Florentine Opera Company’s Noele Stollmack. Lueders also gave a nod to the Milwaukee mainstage directorial debut of General Director William Florescu in Rossini’s classic The Barber of Seville. In addition to a successful mainstage season, the organization also had a dramatic increase in performances of its in-school education production, The Three Little Pigs, showcasing the continued and growing success of the Florentine’s opera education and community outreach efforts in recent years.
Although the Florentine Opera Company celebrated a successful 2006-07 season, the day was tinged with sadness as those present paused to remember the late
Keith Gores, former President of the Board of Directors. While speaking of his predecessor, Lueders stated, “With Keith’s passing, the Florentine has lost a staunch supporter, and our community has lost a true steward. I can think of no better way to honor his service to the organization than to assert my own commitment to its continued excellence as we move into the 74th season. Furthermore, I know that Keith would join me in celebrating the many stellar achievements of the Florentine Opera Company over the past year.”
General Director William Florescu echoed Lueder’s sentiments, adding, “I also remain hopeful as I reflect upon Keith’s leadership during his tenure as President, which has left an indelible legacy. As we move forward into the 2007-08 season, we at the Florentine are more determined then ever to bring the proud tradition of producing great opera for the region while fostering its fiscal health. It is in this way that the Florentine Opera Company can successfully ensure that the same quality programming will continue to inspire audiences for generations to come.”
