Can you Handel it? The Florentine presents Semele

Company's first-ever Baroque opera is a tale of ambition, desire and drama of mythic proportions

MILWAUKEE, Wis.-December 3, 2008-The Florentine Opera continues its 75th Anniversary season with a Florentine first: George Frideric Handel's dramatic Semele. This rousing opera tells the cautionary tale of an ambitious young beauty's quest for immortality. Diving deep into the history of ancient mythology, Semele explores the clashing of gods and mortals, the folly of vanity, and the fatal consequences of forbidden passion, all presented at the elegant historic Pabst Theater. Baroque melodies soar to the heavens, as vanity, revenge and passion erupt in a thunderous conclusion onstage.

The Florentine Opera's exquisite first-ever Baroque opera is based on Director John La Bouchardiere's Scottish Opera production, which garnered international attention following its 2005 premiere. Jane Glover, a world-renowned Baroque expert from Chicago's Music of the Baroque, conducts Handel's glorious score. Jennifer Aylmer stars in the title role, and Robert Breault as Jupitor, Sandra Piques Eddy as Juno/Ino, Jason Abrams as Athamas and Jason Hardy as Somnus/Cadmus bring this gorgeous work to stunning life.
