Patricia Risley Named Marie Z. Uihlein Artist For 10-11 Season
Ms. Risley will portray the title role in the Florentine's upcoming Dido & Aeneas
MILWAUKEE,Wis.—May 4, 2011—The Florentine Opera Company names mezzo soprano Patricia Risley as the recipient of the Marie Z. Uihlein Artist Fund sponsorship for the 2010-2011 season. Ms. Risley will appear as Dido in Henry Purcell's Dido & Aeneas, which will be presented by the Florentine Operaas a double-bill with John Blow's Venus & Adonis in May 2011. Opera News hails Patricia Risley for "her voice...luscious and agile, her characterization both boisterous and tender" as well as her beautiful "singing with ease and certainty." She is frequently sought after on national and international stages, for both opera and concert engagements, with companies including the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Houston Grand Opera, Staatsoper unter den Linden, Teatro Real, Bayerische Staatsoper, Los Angeles Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, Ravinia Festival, and Israel Philharmonic.
Patricia Risley's 2010-11 season includes her debut with New York City Opera as Dinah in Bernstein's A Quiet Place and her performance of Stewardess in Dove's Flight with Austin Lyric Opera. She also recently created the role of Evvy Powers in Machover's Death and the Powers at Opéra de Monte Carlo. She returns to Santa Fe Opera for Margret in Wozzeck, also appearing in Palm Beach Opera as Dorabella in
Così fan tutte and returning to the Metropolitan Opera roster for La traviata. Florentine Opera audiences most recently saw Ms. Risley as Sharon Falconer in the Midwest premiere of Elmer Gantry in March 2010, a recording of which will be released by NAXOS in late July 2011.
Ms. Risley is the eighth vocalist recognized by the Marie Z. Uihlein Artist Fund. The fund was established in 2004 when Marie Uihlein, a longtime Florentine supporter, contributed the Company's first million-dollar gift. Earnings from the gift's investment sponsor a singer of superlative quality each season.
