Little Red's Most Unusual Day (suitable for grades K-4)

The Florentine Opera is pleased to introduce Little Red’s Most Unusual Day, a one-act opera to be presented in elementary schools throughout southeastern Wisconsin and beyond.

Little Red’s Most Unusual Day is an operatic version of the popular Little Red Riding Hood fairytale.  Performed in English, Little Red’s Most Unusual Day features the music of Jacques Offenbach and Gioacchino Rossini with words and story by John Davies. The story will captivate and entertain students as they watch Little Red, Dudley (the Forest Ranger) and Granny outfox the wolf, Mr. Big Bad. As is the tradition with John Davies compiled works, students learn valuable life lessons throughout the course of the performance.  In this case, Little Red learns the importance of listening to her mother and the value of obedience.

Students will hear music from the following operas: The Barber of Seville, The Tales of Hoffman, La Vie Parisienne, Barbe-Blue, Les Bavards, La Perichole, Mesdames de la Halle.

- Dates available in January, February, and March or by special request
- Performed in English
- Program includes a Q&A session
- Performance cost is $475 for one performance or $900 for two performances
- Teacher Resource Guides are provided to educators

Opera Inside Out

This highly interactive program accomplishes two objectives: it gives students a behind-the-scenes look at all the elements that contribute to producing opera, and it also introduces students to career opportunities on and off the stage. Opera Inside-Out is a modular program focusing on a range of areas including stage direction, costumes, make-up, lighting design, props, vocal performance and arts administration.

During the 2006-2007 season, Opera Inside Out program was offered at the Downtown Institute of Arts and Letters.  Beginning in March, students were introduced to various aspects of opera during each in-school session and had the opportunity to interact with singers and musicians, as well as production and administrative staff.  The program culminated with the chance for all participating students to attend the Florentine’s production of The Barber of Seville

In the fall of 2007, the Florentine will continue Opera Inside Out with the Downtown Institute of Arts and Letters.  The Florentine is also happy to announce that 8th grade choral students from Greenfield Middle School have been selected to participate in the spring Opera Inside Out session.

High School Master Class

The Florentine Opera’s High School Master Class was a pilot program in the 2004-05 season, specifically designed to meet the needs of the gifted young singer interested in gaining knowledge and pursuing continued education in the vocal arts medium.  Our objective is to provide guidance and mentorship and to nurture vocalists with professional experiences.  Following an audition process, four students were selected to participate in a two-hour master class led by William Florescu, General Director of the Florentine Opera Company.  These students were Leisa Sunier of Kenosha, Derek Scruggs of Milwaukee, Andrew Riehle of Mukwonago, and Sarah Larson of Milwaukee.  The two candidates to receive honorable mention were Rachel Hubbard of Racine and Megan Gryga of West Bend.  All students attending the master class enjoyed the opportunity to learn helpful vocal and auditioning techniques, and were able to ask questions and gain insight into the world of vocal performance and opera.

The Florentine Opera is proud to offer high school students the opportunity to witness Wisconsin’s oldest professional arts group. GET OPERA awards opera tickets to high school student groups, enabling them to enhance their learning and attend a live opera.

All high school music teachers in Wisconsin are notified of the program through brochure mailings, however the program is not limited to music students. We encourage all who are interested to apply.
