Praised by critics as a “…voice [which] abounds in velvet timbre, which can sound both dramatic and lyrical” and “a real dramatic baritone voice… applying impressive mezza voce in dynamics, but also letting the tone resound evenly in full, voluminous fortes, including top notes”, baritone Daniel Luis de Vicente is quickly establishing himself at the international level, known for his elasticity and skill as both a singer and actor in both lyric and dramatic roles.
Recently the winner of the 2020 Austrian Music Theater Prize for best male supporting role, he is quickly gaining recognition for his fully-scoped and thrilling interpretations of 19th and 20th century Italian repertoire. His appearances in 2022 include collaborations with Oper Frankfurt, Staatsoper Hannover and Staattheater Klagenfurt as Rigoletto. Mr. de Vicente will also be interpreting his first Scarpia (Tosca) with Tiroler Landestheater Innsbruck in the 21/22 season. In a televised event hosted by Česká televize, Mr. de Vicente made his Rigoletto debut with the Prague State Opera in January 2021 to critical acclaim. In May 2021, he reprised the double – bill of the roles Michele and Gianni Schicchi at the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden to a YouTube stream, receiving critical praise, and will be giving live performances throughout the rest of the year.
In the summer he debuted at the Bregenzer Festspiele as the title role in Rigoletto, performing to thousands of people nightly on the lake stage. He also debuted with the Slovak National Theater in both live and streamed performances of La Traviata as Germont, as part of an all-star cast. In the 19/20 season, he debuted the role of Giorgio Germont (Traviata) in a joint production with Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern and Theater Heilbronn, as well as debuting the roles of Michele and Gianni Schicchi (Il Trittico) with the Tiroler Landestheater, Innsbruck. In 2018, he debuted as the title role in the German premiere of the zarzuela El Gato Montés with the Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern, which won "Opern Welt's" yearbook nomination for best new production of 2018.
That fall, he made his Paolo Albiani (Simone Boccanegra) and Austrian debut with the Tiroler Landestheater Innsbruck, reprising the role later in 2019 at the Staatstheater Mainz. Previous to these performances, he was heard as the baritone soloist in Dvorak's "Te Deum"and Beethoven's "9th Symphony" with the Bochumer Symphoniker (BoSy) in the new Anneliese Brost Musikforum. He was also a featured soloist in a concert with Darmstädter Residenzfestspiele named "Italienische Opernnacht", and the previous summer, sang Capellio (I Capuleti ed I Montecchi) with Bassano OperaEstate and the Teatro Verdi in Padova, Italy.
At the age of six, he began taking piano lessons. By the time he graduated high school he was also proficient at the clarinet, tuba, classical guitar and Galician bagpipes, and began singing in local choirs. He holds B.M. and M.M. degrees in Vocal Performance from the University of South Florida. After completing his Master’s degree, Mr. de Vicente moved to Venice, Italy, where he lived for over a decade. He currently lives in Germany and speaks fluent Spanish, Galician, English, Italian, Venetian dialect, and German.
