Zachary Nelson is an acclaimed American baritone recognized for his vocal power and nuanced characterizations. A graduate of the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia, he has established himself as a mainstay on the world’s leading stages, including the Dresden Semperoper, San Francisco Opera, and the Canadian Opera Company.
A regular presence at Lyric Opera of Chicago, Nelson’s credits there include Marcello in La bohème, Donner in Das Rheingold, and the role of Paul in the world premiere of Missy Mazzoli’s The Listeners. He is equally celebrated for his portrayals of the Mozart and Rossini Figaros, Leporello in Don Giovanni, and the title role in Sweeney Todd.
Nelson’s connection to the Florentine Opera includes a standout performance as Dulcamara in L’elisir d’amore. His 2025/26 season features returns to Chicago as Sharpless in Madama Butterfly, a house debut with Utah Opera as Don Pizarro in Fidelio, and a role debut as Marcello with Pittsburgh Opera.
